Full Version: How To remove Seat - Tool Tray- Access Battery

I have been asked to do a tutorial on removing the seat and tool tray. This is how I do it.

First pop bike on centerstand.

Then locate the helmet lock on the left hand side of the bike. Put ignition key into the lock (*** do this ONLY after you have put your bike on the centerstand...not before or you may bend your key when lifting the bike)

Directly behind this is the seat removal latch, the small black tab above my finger tip in this pic.

Turn key clockwise to the 5 oclock position. You should hear an audible click. This will open helmet lock and allow seat latch to be operated. I use the thumb of my right hand to push the lever down and use my left hand to grab and lift off the seat

Once seat is off, locate tool tray behind rear of fuel tank. undo rubber band strap and remove tool bag and set everything aside.

The tool tray is held on with a plastic push pin and a JIS (Japanese industrial screw) shouldered screw.

The push pin is located in the left rear of the tool tray. Here I am pointing at it with my push pin tool. My other bike has a ton of these so I made a tool from bamboo, but you can use the pointy end of a small Phillips screw driver or a pencil or pen or allen wrench

use your tool to push on the very center of the push pin

the center section will pop in and disappear then reach in and with your fingernail under the edge of the head of the push pin, pop it out. Set it aside.

On the right rear side of the tray is the JIS screw. You can use a Phillips screw driver. Here right in front of my screw driver

Go ahead and using a medium Phillips ( or a JIS screwdriver if you have one) remove this screw and set it aside


Now you can lift out the tool tray exposing the battery

Your dealer was given specific instructions by Honda to leave this black strap on the battery being pointed at by my push pin tool. This is for lifting the battery in and out. It would be difficult without it. Hope your dealer left yours in there as instructed.

For reassembly, put your tool tray back in. Your push pin will look like this after removal

Push on the little pointed end upwards until the head pops out .Push back into hole (you may have to wiggle the tray around to line up) with the head of the push pin sticking up

Then put your JIS screw back in loosely (do not tighten yet)

Push head of push pin down until it is flush

Go ahead and tighten JIS screw

Put tools back in tray and affix secure with rubber band

Slide seat back into position from the rear and push forward and down until you hear it latch

Turn key counter-clockwise to 12 oclock, again you should hear an audible click, helmet holder will close and remove key and stick in pocket or ignition

Take bike off centerstand.
Nicely done, Ferret. I still don't quite understand why Honda didn't just use 2 x JIS head screws rather than one screw and one pushpin.
Probably saved a few cents.

I am going to have to go back and look at mine but I think the previous owner broke my push pin off and threw it away because when I put on the battery tender pigtail I dont remember it. Huh Also, I dont remember having the black strap on my battery to get it out because I remembered thinking this is going to be a %$#@! when the time comes. Angry Thats what I get for buying used I guess.

I have no idea why Honda used that goofy push pin..or the screw for that matter, I mean where is the tray going to go? It could just lay in there I would think. Anyhow F7 if you are missing the push pin don't sweat it, but they sell similar pins at Loews Hardware stores and probably others.

For me if the pin ever breaks, unless I start hearing a rattle, I'm going to let the JIS screw keep the tool tray in place.
Lots of good info in these old threads! I wish I had read it before putting my bike on the center stand with the key in place. I bent it right away.

Would you mind posting a photo with the band in place?

I believe they used the push pin (or bumper seal clip as Honda calls it) because the box is kept level with a cylindrical plastic post on the left side (see photo below). It would be extremely difficult to get a nut into the corresponding hole created.

The pan screw goes into what Honda calls "special nut" (part #6).

Thanks for your time to show all this good advice but it is going to suck for me not having a center stand.....
it had to go for the 4 into 4 pipes it looks like.
Thanks Ferret! There are two plastic hooks built into the bottom of the box. I thought maybe the strap went through them somehow.
