Bike Cam or Helmet Cam? - egleaves - 01-05-2018 11:55 AM

I’m looking for advice or relatable experiences regarding video cameras. I really want to have video rolling while I ride…just in case. Living in California affords me the opportunity to ride almost every day, and I do. 70 miles of daily commuting (more if I take the long way home), plus leisure rides means I ride at least 400 miles per week. My daily commute takes me from back roads of the rural foothills to the battle field of a freeway in the big city. That puts me up against a lot of different drivers, intersection types, and road scenarios. Primarily, I want a video record of any traffic incidents whether they’re they my fault or not. I also would like to capture and preserve some of my rides.

I’m exploring the pros and cons of bike-mounted cams vs. helmet cams and learning what features available and which are important to me. On one hand I like the idea of a bike mounted camera system that is wired into the bike, on the other hand I like the idea of a helmet camera that follows my head movements.

Bike Mounted

Pros:
• Powered by bike
• Multiple cameras possible

Cons:
• Fixed perspective
• Susceptible to vibrations

Helmet Mounted

Pros:
• Records from riders POV
• Follows head movement

Cons:
• Have to charge batteries
• Protrudes from helmet

Anyone have thoughts or experiences with video setups?

much more important is the cut after...... making no boring movie is a big art for example: often, no setting longer than 3sec. and after must come realy something other , variety is the big slogan........but clear the ground materials is too a important thing....for example . all shaked and badlight situations cut out...

good movie means big work....

Interesting, but I don't plan to make movies with any sort of production value. I'm mostly interested in recording traffic incidents.

It might be more that you want to deal with, but a GoPro "Chesty" or the like is another option to consider. I haven't used mine on the bike in quite some time and I would definitely play around more with the camera angle in the future, but I totally tend to forget that I'm wearing it while riding which is nice. (Regarding the sound — I did not hook up an external mic in this video.)

That's an option I haven't seen yet. I like that the bike is kinda the star of the show. Thanks, Guth. I'm going to look into this one.

Heres another video using the chest mount. I tried to upload the video quickly and it's been a while since I've messed with this sort of stuff so I'm not sure what else I need to do to improve the video quality at this point. At any rate, I just wanted to give you another idea of what things look like aboard a CB using this type of mount (with a slightly different camera angle this time around).

Here is what's grabbing my attention right now:
INNOVV K1

And a pretty thorough review on the product by Web Bike World:
https://www.webbikeworld.com/innovv-k1-review/

The price is right and this setup does everything I'm looking for with one big exception...no Bluetooth audio. There is a speaker for voice prompts and alerts, but I would stow the unit under my seat and there is no way I would hear it over bike/road/wind noise.

Maybe I can get a third ear grafted to my butt. Big Grin
