That's a good point. This might well explain why the review that Ride Apart did of the CB1100 back in 2013 seemed to stand out from so many of the others. In that case I believe the journalist spent an entire month with the bike before writing the review.

That’s not really the fault of the journalist, is it? Does Honda give GoldWings out for 1 year long tests to journalists? No. They fly them all in to a controlled press event with explicit limits. Unless a publication buys a bike and lives with it for an extended time, which is prohibitive, or the OEM lends it to them with no strings attached, the long term test isn’t going to be a regular occurrence. And a poorly paid journalist is not at fault.

No, you are right, it's not totally their fault. But I have gone in to look at new models and had the salesman catch me lying on the floor trying to figure out how one could possibly get to the oil filter, so I could tell someone how difficult it might be when asked. I've had my wife sit on the back of bikes I have no intention of buying to see how the passenger seat is, rear foot peg location, grab handle location and could report that info if asked. Dirck Edge from MC Daily said at the Kawasaki Z900RS launch that besides himself, he only saw one other writer from Road Racing World try adjusting the suspension on the bikes to see what effect it had, the rest just rode them as delivered, and then reported the suspension wallowed and pogo'd on anything other than smooth roads once the pace picked up.

The moto journalist is the messenger between the manufacturer and the buyer. He's writing the report that may or may not convince me to spend my hard earned cash on a machine. If you can't personally ride the bikes, you rely on the ride reports from the moto journalists for info. If I'm not getting enough info, I have to lay at least part of the blame at the feet of the guys reporting that info to me, as they are the ones spending time with the actual machines, while selling me magazines with those reports (info) inside.

Some are much better at getting and giving info than others I must say.

You should become a journalist, then! An exhaustive oil filter extraction review of all the new models would bring readers in in droves!

Very few people care about those details. I don’t believe you applied them to buying your CB. You probably said, WTF, I need to have that bike’ not, ‘If the suspension sag is excessive with a pillion and if the oil filter is a pain to get at, forget the CB.’

Magazines are not sold on those criteria. Nor are most motorcycles.

I will agree that not all have been the optimum available. I purchased a new CB160 when I was stationed at McGuire AFB (1966-1967) because a CB450 was simply not in my budget. The only bike before that was also a Honda, the dealer was close to base...but had I known how easy it was to "drown" the air filter in heavy rain, my choice may have been different.

Oh, I will too, and I’m at or near those levels of 2 and 4 wheel purchases. I have found that the info I glean from magazines, websites, specifications, and with my own two eyes and seat of my pants has been more than ample enough to make informed decisions.

The people who buy and own bikes, and then crowd- source their experiences and knowledge via forums like this, will always be the best way to determine the nitty gritty about the machines.

Motorcycle Consumer News for years was a reliable, unbiased source of bike and product evaluations. Many of you may disagree, but since the departure of Dave Searle as editor, I lament the direction the magazine has taken. The reviews now seem to be nothing more than a rehash of the sales brochure. It's unfortunate.

I found that magazine to be rather insufferable, TBH. It lost me when it devised columns to supplements and yoga.

It's model of paid subscription with no advertising is admirable, but my sense is, in today's digital age, it's been left behind, with very limited reach.

Personally, I m glad you are not a journalist, and have enough time to ride your bikes as much as you do and be a wealth of knowledge for this site and share your knowledge for free.

I look forward to reading your comments daily rather having to wait 30 days for a new issue of a magazine to come out.

Looking forward to meeting you and other riders next summer that have posted information on this site that I enjoyed reading.
