How To Cure High Idle Issues (possibly)
Forum member 736CC posted this in the Hunting RPM thread and when another tried it (forum member Wisedrum) it seemed to work well for him, so I am posting it here, as a separate thread in How To section. If you are having high idle issues give this a try and report back.

From 736cc:

My bike was idling at 2200 rpm in gear and 1600 in neutral after trying to start w/ a very weak battery (it sat for 3 weeks or so and battery over 3 years old). Idling did slightly improve when fully warmed up but still funky.

So, I

(1) disconnected battery, squeezed brake lever (to discharge any remaining juice in capacitors)

(2)charged the same battery (if your battery is old maybe a replacement would be in order)

(3) drained the air box vapor collector (somebody here said to do so can help this idle issue; its the short, plugged 90 degree tube in front of air box; it was full of brown liquid that dribbled out),

(4) re-connected battery

(5) turned on ignition

(6) did the throttle roll-on procedure w/ key on before starting, (note that means slowly rotate throttle twice from full off to full on back to full off)

(7) turned key off

(8) turned key on

(9) started the bike.

Runs as normal, 1400 rpm cold idle (it always did that), go for a ride and it idled at 1050 rpm when warmed up in a couple minutes or a mile or 2. Things seem to be back to normal for several rides now.
Try these home remedies if your bike is idling erratic and post results.

Maybe this is the re-boot procedure for a confused ECU w/ a weak battery issue and air box condensation issue.

Thanks 736cc

Erratic idle = Windows Bluescreen?

The older Microsoft Windows operating systems were notorious for freezing up with a blank "blue screen" on the monitors display. The only solution was to "reboot" the system. This sometimes involved unplugging the computer for a couple of minutes and restarting from scratch. Sounds familiar to your proposed solution.

Great post by the way. I think you might have nailed it! I can't wait for mine to start acting up so I can test it!

Funny thing about today's cars & bikes... they love good grounding & a minimum voltage to think and operate correctly.

Glad you were able to correct the problem and for sharing.

I' m glad for sharing too. But this seemed not to be the solution for my idlle problem.
On the first test ride after my input, the CB behaved well. On the second and now the third today, it fell back into what I call its ' bad behaviour' , as if nothing had happened. Sometimes more , sometimes less, I don't understand it. One forum member brought up the idea of the kat, which can cause the engine to run with higher idle revs, because it shall be warmed up more, although my Honda is still running a while. Okay, it's cold outside today, 0°. Maybe the CB has this kind of selfregulation, which is nowhere described and is not an explaination, why the CB shows the same symptom in warmer periods like summer.
So, I'm still searching and have a few options. One will be to reset the ECU by a local dealer, another one is, to let this kind of update be played into the ECU. With good luck the Honda cures itself by itself is a different hope of mine. But til yet it didn't. Or spend some money on exchanging the IAC. Or do nothing at all, 'cause the CB runs well,.sometimes with higher idle revs. I will drive the bike even more and make up my mind, in which direction I will go. It's very cold outside....

well that's dissapointing to hear Wisedrum. Was hoping this was a cure for the problem. Think I will leave it up for awhile and see if it helps anyone else. If not I may remove the thread here in the How To section.

Ferret, I would leave the thread where it has been, but you still have put it into the 'how to section'.

Maybe each CB and its owner is different and though it does not take too much time, to try this kind of 'reseting idea' out. It may help someone else, who knows?
In the idle problem situation I would not leave an attempt untouched, especially the ones, which do not cost any money and are easy to perform from most owners.
