I know I'm overstating it, but it is a bit of a distraction.

These discussions remind me of the time I happened to be on the same NJ highway just a bit earlier than when a newbie rider was on the same stretch and waved to another rider, lost control of his bike, and crossed the center grass median and was killed under a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Freaky and not very likely I know, but it happened.

VW - I don't think you grossly overstated this. I have stopped looking to see if there's an acknowledgement...I just wave and keep my eyes downfield. I guess that's part of why I think that I get more out of waving than I do out of getting waved at.

Well, I DO greet every oncoming rider by a gentle lift of my left eyebrow. Hello

RE: Lots of waving
My experience with HD riders is like this:

- HD owners, who ride a lot, usually had non-HD bikes before they can afford an HD. They bought their HD to ride. They are pleasant to talk to and hang out with. They are not afraid of saying things that they don't like about their Harley. Some even offered to join me and we rode together.

- HD owners, who buy a Harley because they want to join THE cult, treat anything non-Harley as junk. They swear by the name of Harley. They won't say anything bad about HD even if other HD owners point out the flaws. They like to appear "tough guys" to others. When I try to start a conversation with these folks, it was kept as short as possible.
