RE: Stereotypes, pondering and I'm not tough enough
We had a saying in the Army - "There is a fine line between being hard and being stupid". Anybody can be uncomfortable, the question is why?
I don't fit into any of the bike groups you see hanging out at the coffee shops so none of them really talk to me, which is fine as I ride alone (most of the time) for a reason. I look like a Harley rider (6'2", 230lbs, bushy grey beard and long hair since retiring from the Army last year), wear a full face modular helmet (sacrilege I know) on my Harley and wear mostly ballistic nylon gear for its versatility. Now they will laugh at me even more as all my riding jackets are Harley jackets and I'm too cheap to buy a new jacket just for the CB1100.
I tried out a friend's "pudding bowl" helmet once, it sucked!! At highway speeds it was absolutely horrendous, I don't understand why you would do that to yourself.
Occasionally I will ride from my house to my business in a t-shirt with a 3/4 helmet but I live 1.6km away in a town of 1000. Always with pants and boots on though. Any further than that and I have a riding jacket and gloves on and modular helmet.
