Sad Broke my foot in police motorcycle class
I took the Maryland State Police Basic Motorcycle Class. It's a 2 week class that focuses mostly on 20 small cone courses. I made it to the final day of the first week when the bike (850 lbs. Harley) fell on the top of my right foot before the midterm. I actually didn't know how bad the injury was; I've never broken a bone before and thought my foot was just really sore. I then completed the midterm and passed. Got home, saw my foot, and knew instantly that I was done Sad

Had a ct scan a couple days ago and I'm about to leave for the follow-up appointment to see if I need surgery or not... let's hope for the best! I'm going stir crazy staring at my CB1100 in the garage.

Feel free to ask any questions about the class as I would love to share everything. It was definitely one of the most challenging things I've done in my life! My spot is saved for the next class in the fall and I'll be trying again.

wow. Sounded super-exciting....well, up to the midterm at least. If there are any pics or video from the class, I'm sure we'd love to see them.

Best of luck on the CT scan and with whatever course of action that sends you on.

Heal fast!

Thanks! I just got back from the Dr. and I'm happy to report that I do not need surgery, only crutches and the boot for the next few weeks. I should be back to work on light/desk duty next week so that will help pass the time.

I do have 2 videos that I need to upload; one of the high-speed cornering segment and another of the controlled sliding. They removed the controlled slide segment from the class because of too many people getting hurt, but the instructors at least demonstrate it.

Can you do high speed pursuits and write tickets now?

I plan to take a Police motorcycle course next summer. I already did Lee Park's Total Control level 1 this year and plan to take another course Called "Surviving the Streets" which takes place on a racetrack in a few weeks. The course I want to take is in Troy Michigan.

Our cycle unit is currently just volunteer for funeral escorts, parades, and demonstrations. I wouldn't pursue a suspect while on a police bike even if I could.

My biggest piece of advice to prepare for the class is to hit the gym for squats, deadlifts, and forearm exercises. Picking-up and throwing around a Harley Davidson gets old fast!
