For sure John, it's not for everybody! At 6' 30" inseam the cb fits like a glove, I've put 11000km on it since buying it in March and that's with record breaking rainfall for this area. The Yamaha FZ/xsr series wasn't for me, but I'm sure there are lots of people that feel the opposite. The xsr is cheaper has more power is under 1000cc so costs less for insurance, I imagine would be very reliable and has better handling and braking than the cb. I see Yamaha's 900 line very similar to the way I see hondas 500. The Cb500, cbr500 and cb500x share a lot of components and performance the same way the FZ, XSR, and FJ from Yamaha do.

Could throw money at the seat, but at £11 000 plus I'd want it to be ready for use.

Having owned both a Honda CB500XA for three years and currently riding a CB1100 EX, I found the seats on both uncomfortable after a few hours. I bought an inexpensive Coleman MadDog ATV seat pad which I am now using on the CB1100 EX. It helps, but is not the answer.

Like you I am 6'2" tall with a 32" inseam. The CB500XA was the more comfortable of the two machines because your legs are not tucked as much. The handle grips are also easier to reach, and the riding position is more straight up.

You can compare the ergonomics of motorcycles on the Motorcycle Ergonomics website.

The CB500XA comes with a windscreen but is not sufficient for someone of our height. I purchased a California Scientific screen and it pushed the wind blast to the top of my helmet. I also wore 3M E-A-Rsoft yellow neon ear plugs that allowed me to wear my open face Bell helmet in quiet comfort.

When it comes to power, the 48 horsepower CB500XA is no match for the CB1100 EX. But it is considerable lighter and more nimble. I would not recommend it for long touring journeys or two up, but is great for day long rides on twisty back roads. It can also handle the occasional gravel road.

If you test riding different motorcycles, you might want to try the smaller CB, or its big brother the Africa Twin.
