I've got the Shoei J-cruise Helmet in Red. Looks great but I hear you about the most common impact point being the chin.

I bought the black checkered Biltwell Gringo S, ordered according to website size chart--will see in a few days how it fits--found it 50% off at Solomoto

My Shoei GT-Air is certainly not retro although it is "classic white" in color (my name for it, not Shoei's), nor does it match my bike. But it is very comfortable, quiet and I love the built-in sun visor.
My buddy who was recently hit from behind while at a stoplight also owned the same model helmet. He's even more impressed with it now after it did a very thorough job of protecting his noggin' from the impact of the accident.

I have a Gringo S. Mine fit better after a few rides. Give it some time... Quieter than my Shoei!! It is now my go to lid.

Like Guth, I wear a Shoei GT-Air, which I bought to replace my HJC FS10 helmet. I was wearing the HJC during my March 2016 accident. I agree that the Shoei is very comfortable and is definitely quieter than the HJC. I realize the sun shade does not go all the way down, but that does not bother me. It provides adequate driving shading and I am able to look below the shading to quickly see my instruments, turn signal indicator, etc. The helmet is high vis yellow. The only vintage feature about this helmet is the face looking out the the shield.

RE: What helmet are you wearing?
I think that the GT-Air can be a bit tricky for some people. Obviously it has to fit the shape of your head (or vice versa) to get the most out of it. But beyond that, due to the fact that the bottom of the helmet is a bit more curved inward than most other helmet designs, I feel that this helmet has to feel almost flat-out uncomfortable when first slipping it on when the helmet is new (in other words, when the helmet is new, it is actually uncomfortable to slip it onto your head). But once it's on, if the shape works for you, then it's a great helmet — very comfy and very quiet. Fortunately the positioning of the sun visors bottom edge works out perfectly for me. The padding in the GT-Air does break in (break down) with time and the helmet will eventually go on easier. You can also buy different thickness interior cheek pads to help custom fit the helmet to your face, at least to a degree anyway.

+1 Guth, Exactly my experience when I was breaking in the GT-Air. My dealer assured me the helmet padding will break-in and conform to my head. He was right! It is correctly snug, but very comfortable.

RE: What helmet are you wearing?
My experience with the GT-Air was disappointing. Coming from a Schuberth S1, I found the GT-Air to be very noisy. Very nice build quality and it fit great in the store, but if they would have let me take it out for a ride before buying it, I wouldn't have bought it. I sold it after three rides and bought another Schuberth. I've been very pleased with my C3-Pro. It just goes to show we're all different.
Ride more. Worry less.
