Buy the 2014, it's a smokin' deal. You will not regret it.
Ya, the 2017 has several desirable updates, and if you have the money to throw around, it may be worth it to you, but... the 2017 is, at it's core, identical to the 2014 (6-speed, etc.).
As for power; Don't listen to the magazines/bloggers/forums. Their baseline for comparison are the current crop of high HP sport bikes.
The power of the CB1100 is more than adequate. Do you need a 750HP Hemi powered car? Or will a Honda Accord do? You decide.
Why did the 2014 Standard (black version) not sell? Well, because the wizards at Honda were trying to go head-to-head in the young hipster market against the likes of the Triumphs. The 2014 Deluxe (a true retro looking bike, IMHO) sold out as fast as they made them, why, because us old geezers who remember the CB750 bought them.
Don't sit on the fence, buy it.
As good as the old Magna was back in the day, let's face it, keeping and old bike on the road is a full time job... Wouldn't you rather be riding than wrenching?

Is 2014 US Standard indeed a 6-speed? This is the only item that would make me consider 2017 over 2014 - given the price difference. I personally like the whole "retro" thing, but tube tires in 2017? Thanks, but no, thanks...

Worse, their "baseline" is some in-vogue paper specification they heard of without much understanding of real motorcycles on real roads. There, 150W/kg of travel mass is all you'll ever need. If, on the other hand, you want to go on the track, buy a different bike altogether.

Because the numbers imported were so small that Honda never put any serious marketing effort behind the product.

I bought my '14 standard about a month ago. I have only about 1800 miles on it only because I have two other bikes to ride.
A few observations:
Not retro enough, the DLX out sold it - Back in the '70's and '80's 4 into one exhaust was all the rage for aftermarket mod. A "Yoshi" 4into 1 was a thing to be coveted. I concede that all black wasn't offered or common custom, But I like the look.
'14 vs '17, I'm not one who trades bikes often. I keep them a long time and ride them a lot. So, giving up the three years from "new" doesn't affect me. Besides, half off MSRP is really appealing.
Low Power, the listed HP numbers are not as high as some sport bikes, but for practical use this bike is awesome. I find the gear indicator essential because between 30 and 70 it hardly matters if you ride in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear. The bike pulls strong and smooth. The seating position is forward, but not aggressive. It is comfortable.
The seat isn't the best, but most bikes now are built that way.
Exhaust sound, It matters to some. I get it. But personally, from a long career of working in noisy places; I have no interest in further damaging my hearing. I appreciate the quiet.
This is my favorite bike for in town or short local trips. I've taken it to it's first rally putting 300 miles on it in a weekend, then another of near 600 miles. But honestly, For my upcoming 4500 mile ride to the west coast, I'll take my ST11.

I agree with everything tinboatcapt said. Would not be my first choice for a 4500 mile interstate run across the country, as there are other more capable bikes designed for that purpose, however the bike is more than capable of doing it, and if it was the only tool I had, I'd use it. It is far more capable than bikes I DID ride across country when I was young lol.
However I think the bikes strong suit is the the 45-60 mph back roads ride where the abundant torque, lack of vibrations, smooth shifting transmission and powerful brakes become your ally in a pleasant ride of a couple hundred miles.

I'd buy at the heavy discount. $6k is a steal. Why buy the '17 and take the big depreciation hit that will most certainly happen. If you have to have a '17 wait 2 years and get it for $4k off.

Yikes. I understand you were trying to illustrate a point, but the 750hp Hemi vs Honda Accord parallel makes the CB sound like it's got the sex appeal and fun of a minivan.
