"Fortified church" is a new concept for me...the age is hard to comprehend...harder still to realize that they are more or less preserved and still intact.

Here is some more information about the Transylvanian Saxon and how the fortification started: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transylvanian_Saxons
However, visiting these fortified churches and those abandoned Saxon villages made me kind of sad. They are witness of a gone epoch, though meanwhile some Germans are going back to Transylvania and many German companies invest around Hermannstadt area.
From wikipedia:
Quote:The Transylvanian Saxon population has decreased since World War II. Transylvanian Saxons started leaving Transylvania during and after World War II, settling first in Austria, then especially in Germany. The process of emigration continued during Communist rule in Romania, and even into the collapse of the Ceaușescu regime in 1989 when approximately half a million fled to Germany.

“Hm, I regret a little, not to have stopped there to take a picture.“
Don’t regret it, Django. Sometimes the ride is way more important than the pictures.

The depth and richness and time span of the region's history is astounding. The trip looks so moody and retrospective...fascinating storytelling Django. We really appreciate the culture and history of your epic ride.
