Did it get too hot by any chance? That could happen, if you had a lot stop and go and kept the enginge running idle.
There is an automatic switch off to prevent damages.

Probably unrelated but my CB did something similar last year. The engine stalled while I was waiting for the traffic signal on the freeway on-ramp to turn green. I managed to get the bike restarted but it was lugging terribly and wouldn't pull any rpm's. It felt like it was flooding. I entered the freeway and managed to get up to about 40 mph and just rode at that speed in the right lane until my exit came up 15 minutes later. The bike simply wouldn't clear out or run properly, and even holding 40 mph seemed lucky. Got home, parked it, and all was fine the next day. I never found out what happened.
Ride more. Worry less.

1 Cor 13:4-7 (NIV)
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
My 14 STD did the same thing. Hard to start, I also got a check engine light. My battery was only 1.5 years old. I bought a lithium battery off eBay, haven't had a problem sence.

I would just go ahead and replace the battery. The batteries these days when they go kaput, they just go. I ride a 2013 standard and changed it out. Went to start it one day and not even a click. Put in a new one ..... and good to go!
