RE: First Road Bike
Many thanks. Already got 2 really good pair of gloves and my helmet just arrived (a Bell Star) and pretty much have my boots, pants and jacket figured out. Should have all of that wrapped up pretty soon and then it's onto the bike.
Just got a good offer for a used one so "used" sounds like a very good potential option as well.

The Bell Star is an excellent helmet. I second the luggage rack and engine guards. Thumbs Up

Many go with the OEM engine guard, but if you wanted something more minimalist, you might check out the Hurricane. Mounts securely to frame without any strappy things and matches the frame color nicely.

RE: First Road Bike
If no one minds a question with me maybe getting a "newbie" pass - Do you think a CB1100 is maybe a little too much for a first bike? My wife will occasionally be on the back. Might a Suzuki SV650 maybe be "better" to start with? Was also looking at a Moto Guzzi V7, but the dealers are too far away.
Still think it'll likely be the CB1100, but am all ears if you have the time.
Many thanks.

RE: First Road Bike
We've bantered about this before. A number of folks feel the CB makes a fine first bike since it's so forgiving and easy to ride, but my recommendation is to start with something lighter until you gain the confidence that you can manage a heavier bike, especially since it sounds like most of your past riding experience was on dirt bikes. I also don't suggest riding with a passenger until you feel more comfortable as a solo road rider. Given your dirt background, it'll all come back very quickly, I'm sure.

RE: First Road Bike
Thanks for posting that link. This thread and that pretty much answered my questions. I was a good amateur mx'er racing in 7 Nationals (on Amateur Day and those remotely within driving distance) for a few years winning one and coming in 2nd overall at the big one, but that was a long time ago and there was no pavement, cars or large trucks. The bike that really jumped out like crazy was the Moto Guzzi V7, but the only dealers that I'd consider are each 100 miles away in different directions so that might not work.
I would like a bike that's good for a passenger which (because of that and other things) point to a Suzuki V-Strom 650. I do also like the SV650 and there's also the new Yamaha XSR700, but the V-Strom might be better for two.
Also, I can see myself building a small stable of bikes vs. trying to find one that does it all so maybe the V-Strom fits perfectly into that mix that might eventually include a CB1100.
Much appreciated the input and with all of the research I've done I can say with confidence that the CB1100 community seems to be the most normal.
