VIN
Hi,

Do you guys know how to decrypt the VIN number of a CB?

Are they all the same (jap, honda, model=CB11) and they only differ on the last figures as consecutive serial numbers, or is there any other info in it?

Just curious.

Yes it does indeed, thanks.

So, as I understand it, it is a combination of model and market and serial number.

So, if I post my 4 last digits of my VIN on the "register thread" and having already posted which model I own, the VIN can be deduced completely except the "hash" code, checksum, redundant part, control figure, or however you want to call it.

However, having a list of some valid Honda's VINs, the rule to generete that checksum character can be easily deduced, so my complete VIN can be deduced.

How is this a worry? I don't know in the US, but here, with a VIN and a few $, you can go to the DMV, DVLA or (how do you call there the agency registering motor vehicles?) and get the address of the owner of any vehicle.

Call me a paranoid, but... Dodgy

RE: VIN
Here I describe the details of a vin:

http://www.cb-1100.de/forum/viewtopic.ph...&hilit=vin

It's mostly written in German. However, I guess you can put it together.

Or see you park the bike someplace and walk away and then they could simply walk up and write down the complete vin number?

Or someone could see you and follow you home, could they not?

The checksum digit can easily be calculated without needing other valid VINs. This article tells you how. Or you just go here.

Well... yes, but my point is that as I wouldn't publish my address on the internet, I don't think posting my VIN is a good idea.

(Thank you all for the good info about the VIN itself)

RE: VIN
Anyone that wants to find your address on the Internet already knows it or can find it by much easier means than taking the VIN to the DMV in the state or country in which you live.
