I run two different grades of Motul Oil in both of my CB's.
In the 2013 CB, I use Motul 4T 7100 10W40 100% Synthetic Ester, and either a Honda OEM oil filter or a K&N.
In the 2017 CB I switched to Motul 300V Factory Line Road Racing 4T 10W40 Ester Core, 100% Synthetic, and a Honda OEM Oil filter or K&N.
I have been using K&N Oil Filters since about 2003 and never had a problem with any of them on any bike.
I was using the same Motul Oil, the 4T 7100 10W40 in both bikes, but the newer Honda was making noticeable clunks occasionally. I was already using the 300V Factory Line in my Z900RS with awesome results, quiet shifting and no clunks!
So I switched the 2017 CB1100EX to the 300V last oil change. It is getting quieter each time I ride it, I change oil usually by time not miles, because riding three different bikes, it takes a while to hit some magical mile marker to change oil. So I change oil on each bike after about 3 months. A little pricey, but these are my babies and I pamper them.

I tell him it says 10W-30 in the manual. He says " I know but they are telling us to use 10W-40 now." I question him a bit further. He is adamant. I buy the 10W-40. Driving home I'm thinking "who should I be listening to, the engineers in Japan who designed this bike and fully understand the difference between 10W-30 and 10W-40, or some kid in the parts department?" Either the engineers were wrong or oil has somehow changed or...
Does anyone have any insight or opinion on this? I'm thinking it is not a big deal and don't feel like driving back to exchange the oil so I'm going ahead with the oil change, but thought I'd check in with you all anyway.
Thanks!

I know this an old thread/answer is late, but I have been changing oil in Motorcycles since 1969. I have heard the argument that engineers know all about oil, BUT they do not ride where the daytime temperatures hit 110F like they do in South Texas. So, I change weight with air temperature in my cars and in my bikes to a lesser degree. 10W30 in winter, about 3 months here, and 10W40 for the remaining 9 months of the year. I have never had an engine seize or fail, ever in my cars or motorcycles. Hope this helps.
