Purchased my CB1100 pre-owned from a dealer in upstate NY this past November sight unseen from an online ad and a phone call. Previous owner only put 800 miles on it, didn't like the riding position and traded it in for a cruiser. I live about 250 miles away, so I planned on making this first ride a memorable one home to Long Island. Traveling light, I carried my old plate, my helmet, leathers and a backpack onto the 4:30AM LIRR train to NYC, rode the 7:00AM Aamtrak to Albany, took a 15 minute cab from the train station and arrived at the dealership at 9:45AM. Signed the papers, slapped on the plate and took the beautiful back road RT 22 South for the next 175 miles on an absolutely gorgeous Fall day to the ferry in Bridgeport, CT and cruised on the boat ride to Long Island. It was a thoroughly enjoyable adventure with no traffic and cost under $100 for the 14 hour trip start to finish. Stopped on my way home at the local motorcycle shop where all my bros were hanging out and had a great story to tell about my first ride on my new motorcycle.
I always say the journey is more important than the destination.
PS- the "oil spill" under my brand-new CB1100 is actually a gag rubber thing my bro placed under my bike at the local shop to get a reaction. He does this to unsuspecting owners with the predictable hysteric results everytime.
