RE: 2013 6 speed
We don't know the number for '13's 5th gear? It's the most interesting for the context of this discussion. 1:1 perhaps?

Wouldn't it be 1.034, going by the chart shown?
The 6 speed sure has a huge gap between 1st and 2nd?

It can't be, can it? That'd only be a .070 difference in the ratios between the '13 and '14. I dunno...this "New Math" just confuses the cuss out of me.

Meguesses that the '14 likely is geared just a tad lower in the first five gears and a tad higher in the sixth, to provide good acceleration as the bike is more heavier, and also targeted toward touring a bit more. That means a passenger, luggage, and so on.
But if you want lower revs, the simple mod is to do sprockets. The thing's got all the torque in the world.
They are posted somewhere around here, Guth found them in some Japanese spec literature. I can't put my finger on them right now.
Found them
The following is translated from the Honda Japan website.
Gear ratios
6 speed box
1 speed: 3.083
2-speed: 1.941
3-speed: 1.478
4-speed: 1.240
5-speed: 1.074
6-speed: 0.964
Reduction ratio (primary/secondary): 1.652/2.222
And heres the five speed box
Transmission 5 speed
Transmission gear ratio
1-speed 3.166(38/12)
2-speed 2.062(33/16)
3-speed 1.545(34/22)
4-speed 1.250(25/20)
5-speed (30/29)
Final Drive Chain 2.166 (39/18)
Aha, this is very interesting. I had read somewhere before that both bikes had the same gear ratio's on 1-5 and only 6th gear was different. That clearly was wrong based on this, and it makes me much less interested in the 6th gear now.
I am extremely happy with my '13 and have no desire to trade it in, just always looking for little improvements where it makes sense. I think I can put this issue to bed in my mind now. Thanks boys!

Remembering lessons learned, specs published on the web should be taken with a grain of salt. The Honda Japan site also shows the EX as having a bit more horsepower and a bit less torque than the Standard model. No idea if this is truly the case.

also remember the 14 has a 1 tooth different rear sprocket... I assume that changes all the ratios

For the street, I'll take torque over horsepower any day...don't have a need to be pushing the rev limiter much these days.

Changing sprockets would be a lot more practical than messing around with tranny gears...and all the money saved could go to better bang-for-the-buck upgrades (like Ohlins for example.) Hmm, I may have just talked myself into something here!

My left foot would be a lot happier if I had another gear. Let me know when you figure it out. Maybe Honda will issue a "hardware update", like 2013 CB1100 1.1.

The Honda manual has a fix for this in the Troubleshooting Section.

I saw that as well. I'm pretty sure it was in Honda's press release when they originally announced the EX model for the European market. That was before they actually started building them, so things could have changed, or more likely, the press people weren't talking to the engineering people.
