, but the first number being too thick can actually cause the oil to take longer to reach the top of the engine on a cold start and thus causing premature wear.

yep, exactly as I understand it.
So when Honda lists 10w-30 or 10w-40 then that's what I'll use.

Harley for their air cooled engines lists 10w-40, 20w-50, 50, 60
or in a pinch diesel engine 20w-50, 15w40 or 10w-40 (all depending on average ambient temps)..

So I'll use what the Manufacturer recommends, the major manufacturers have done the research and testing on their engines and understand them.

10-40 Silkoline full synthetic for my CB1100 in the summer. I don't give a rats ass what Honda says. My motor gets so hot it wants to fry my knees this summer on 10-30. Honda does a lot of "dumb down" specs on their motorcycles. If my motor blows I'll drink the oil in the crankcase...

After wasting a bit too much of my life reading oil threads, I have arrived at this conclusion: Rotella T6 5W/40 Full Syn and Purolator PureOne filters. The VFR runs just fine on this stuff. Clutch/gearbox is slick as grass through a goose. The Calcsi site mentioned elsewhere on this site recomments the PureOne. Rotella has taken bikes beyond 250k miles and when cracked open the engines are pristine. From what I've read here it might be that the 11 wears the same filter as the VFR.

Glad to hear the noise wasn't an issue. Especially since I hope to be a CB11 owner within a year. FWIW, I've rented a BMW on a vacation trip that I thought was going to rattle itself apart. But after 1,100 miles, I just concluded it was the bike's nature - really reliable but felt like it had the engine of a Model T sometimes.

When the Honda dealer did my 600 mile service (at 800 miles), they put in GN4 10w40. It's gets pretty hot here. Went on a 150 mile ride Saturday and it was 103 by the time we got back. This week is actually cool by Dallas standards...only 93 today!

The noise is totally normal. I just picked mine up today and it sounds just like an air-cooled inline four should sound, except quieter. It'll get noisier after it warms up because the oil gets thinner. But if it concerns you by all means have the dealer check it, as you have.

Totally with you, DAC. Rotella is a favorite on Wristtwisters for use in the 919s. There was a fella on there who went 70k some miles with Rotella and the only reason he didn't go any further is because the frame broke. Engine and Trans were fine. Rotella even has the JASO-MA certificate on the back. Works in the 9er, the 11 will get it too.

Uh... If you had your bike serviced at Rockwall Honda (with Al Lamb's license plate bracket) at 800 miles, then your's was one of the bikes they compared mine to. The other was the new CB1100 they assembled and prep'd to diagnose my rattling noise. The day I picked up my bike, Rockwall Honda had another CB1100. All three bikes made the same racket from the cam chain.

Yeah, that was me. I go to Rockwall for service because it's close. I buy from Lamb's because they let me test ride before I buy.
