RE: Motorcycle.com review of '14 Standard
It seems that review was written in a reluctant, I don't like my job or Honda for that matter view by someone who should not be doing such things. The bias hit me right away. I'm all for hearing opinions, but that sucked.

I don't know...I'll grant you that it wasn't exactly an in-depth review, but I didn't think it seemed anti-Honda or anti-CB1100 (have you noticed how much Honda advertising they have on that site lately?) The only thing that really bugged me was their rating the engine 13/20...I suppose just because it's air-cooled and doesn't put out more power, given its displacement. Doesn't seem quite fair, given what a nice engine it is.

Guess I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the review was a rush-job. In this day and age it's all about driving up clicks with new postings, new reviews, new whatever 24/7. That, and catering to short attention spans. The writers are probably cranking out three times as many words overall for half what they used to make.

Seems like an OK review to me, nothing about it bothered me.

Interesting little piece. The only thing with which I would take issue is the author's comment that CB1100 riders "love to hate" the CB1000. The only remotely negative comment about the CB1000 I have heard from CB1100 riders is that comparing the two is useless given the vastly different characteristics of each. I love to hate the comparison....not the other bike.

I thought this was a pretty positive end to the report:

Quote:... the CB is one-hundred percent true to its roots: presumably bulletproof and turn-key ready to go anywhere whenever you are, just like you were in 1969. Now with the priceless upgrade of 46 years of experience.

It wasn't in-depth. Kind of a "oh here's the subtle changes" and "meh"

As an "older than dirt" CB1100 owner I'm not a fan of the Transformers styling of the CB1000R and can't even begin to imagine comparing the two. With water cooling, 11.2-1 compression, 17" tires the CB1000R is simply a naked sport bike and is in no way a point of comparison to the retro CB1100. "generation gap", you bet your booties young man!

Oh, and I believe there's an "R" in CB1000R

I liked the pictures and thought the article wasn't bad. I don't get the engine rating either. If it put out 150 HP would that have raised the rating? Although it's a retro inspired bike, I think it's a great bike in it's own right.

RE: Motorcycle.com review of '14 Standard
Coincidentally, I had a few beers with the author in SoCal a few days before this was published (we met through my IOMTT work for Motorcycle.com.) He arrived on a BMW R9T, and we were joined by Kevin Duke, Editor in Chief of the site...and he arrived on the CB1100. They are also testing a Griso, and there should be a comparo published soon.

We had a spirited conversation about the CB and it's competitors, and, as evidenced by the article, they both like the bike. For what it is. And what it is, is a very good, modern motorcycle with retro style. But they ride every new motorcycle that comes to market (what a great job, Kevin is in Italy right now testing the KTM 390 sport bike!) so their perspective is a bit different from us mere mortals. I wouldn't take umbrage to what was written. I find it hard to disagree with John's review and opinions.

No more CB, but a GB.
Triumphs and Ducatis.
A Norton, MV, and Morini 175.
Probably others.
