I love my Hawk (I've had it for almost 23 years), but this FZ-09 sounds fantastic to me. I don't care much for the styling, but I don't hate it either.

Ya forgot to mention a sixth gear. Also, Yamaha has been making three cylinder 4-strokes for years - they just put 'em in snowmobiles.

The CB still gets the styling nod and if it comes out in black next spring, it'll be hard not to buy one. (The red is growing on me too after seeing all the beautiful bikes on this forum!) I'll be testing both this fall probably. I love it when the bike makers give me difficult choices! (Doesn't happen too often.)

To me the CB1100 vs FZ-09 comparison is strictly an apples/oranges thing. The CB1100 is my clear choice for a relaxing, characterful bike that I can ride two-up with my wife. The FZ-09 is a a naughty little beast that would (hopefully) have the handling/flickability of my Hawk with a whole bunch more power.

At its price, the FZ-09 will certainly eat in to the sales of these.

Absolutely, I think it's very clear what companies have noticed Triumph's huge success with the Street Triple (first MV Agusta, and now Yamaha).
I meant to sit on one before buying the CB, but never had a chance. I couldn't have seriously considered it anyway...it just doesn't look comfortable enough. The 400-pound wet weight is what really attracted my attention. The headlights I could probably get used to, given enough time.

I'm quite fond of the Street Triple, although I'm not too crazy about the design of the new low mount exhaust (I really liked the last generation Street Triple with the optional low mount Arrow exhaust).

Most importantly, as DAC points out, motorcycle manufacturers do seem to be offering an increasing variety of choices. Regardless of how I feel about individual models, the increasing number of choices is definitely an exciting trend. Hopefully motorcycle sales will see a steady increase as a result.

Browsing some CB1100 sites and came across Rider's 2013 People's Choice for Motorcycle of the Year... CB1100 was runner-up to the F6B...

CB1100 vs FZ-09
I rode both the 2013 CB1100 and FZ-09 back-to-back. Both bikes are nice to ride. The Yamaha engine is smoother and makes more power. It likes to be whipped a bit and feels a bit like my early Speed Triple but smaller in size. The Honda is easier going, more comfortable and looks a lot better to me. I chose the CB1100. I don't care for the styling of the Yamaha, but everyone has different tastes. Both are good bikes and will make for happy riders. Pick your poison!
