16,000 valve check
The CB had it's second valve check last week and 4 valves needed shims, 2 ex and 2 in. I haven't ridden it much lately as I knew a check was coming due, finally got some cash together and had it done. I was surprised to find them out of specs. In fact I was going to skip this check because none of my other bikes have valve check intervals this short. Glad now that I did have it done. The tech and I were talking it over and we agreed that this is an air-cooled engine and the other bikes are water, so maybe that's why for the short valve check intervals from Honda.
I plan to ride the CB a little more this spring and summer [ give the VFR a break ] and will probably be at 24k miles this fall. Will keep you posted as to what happens then.

RE: 16,000 valve check
Suprises me too that you had valves out of spec. How were they at the first check?

Just had the ST in for service and had valves checked while in there 54,000 miles and still in spec.

At 8k there were four ex too loose, this time 2 were too tight and 2 loose, I'll let you know which were which when I pick up the bike tomorrow. I had a ST1100 with 110,000 miles on it and had the timing belt replaced, good thing cause it was stretched way out. Anyway only 2 valves had to be reshimmed then, but they weren't out of spec, only near the end of the range. My Yamaha FZ1 was checked at 30k miles and all were good. You never know, hope my CB settles in after this.

RE: 16,000 valve check
I had a bunch done at 18,000 miles on my second check as well. I did the first one at 9,000 and all was well at that point.

This isn't my thread, and I don't want to hijack it either, but I own a VFR800 and a CB1100. My VFR valves didn't go out of adjustment until 50k miles (I checked them at 16k and 32k and they were in spec).

Yes I do Dave, love them both. They are different and yet the same.
I know you know what I mean. I bought my VFR last April with 51k miles on it, it's an 05, I now have 68k miles on it. A super machine. Been to CO, UT, NM and states in between last summer. The CB took me to FL last spring and a run through NC, TN, Va, WV, KY late spring. The VFR PO said he'd checked the valves around 40k, but---------------- if yours were out I may check mine this fall.

Yes, have both and they both have their niche. Where are you at in NC? Couple of good friends in Lincolnton ride with me. Did you make it to the Easy Rider show on Sat? I went cause the online mag I write for got me a free ticket, the mag is "The Carolina Rider" based in Charolette. Look them up and sign up for the weekly email mag.

Ferret, 2 ex were loose and 1 in loose and 1 in tight. Going to keep a close watch on this. Tech gave me his worksheet and we're going to compare with what comes up at 24Kmiles

RE: 16,000 valve check
Were they loose and tight but still in spec? or did they replace 4 shims? if so did they charge you for the shims? if so how much? What was the charge for the valve adjustment?

They were out of spec, one was just on the edge and he moved some around to bring in near the middle. No charge for the shims as he had a bunch on hand and the charge total was $250. My tech has his own shop, worked at a Honda shop and a Yamaha. Opened his own cause he knew the brand shops were ripping off the customers. He has done the valve check on my former St1100, Yamaha FZ1 and Dl1000 Vstrom.
