RE: Signature Line
Ironic, though not surprising, that it was Cormanus who ferreted out the truth as opposed to the ferret. Well done sleuth extraordinaire. I could use a man of your talents in several homicide investigations I currently have underway. An express package with copies of the case files is en route to the Land of Oz.

Confessions are a funny thing. Rarely do they come all at once and rarer still do they contain the entire truth. It is a delicate, at times awkward dance between the interrogator and the suspect. The skill and experience of the detective pitted against the intelligence and sophistication of the criminal. All the while the suspect is listening for clues in the questioning. How much do they already know? How much can I give up that makes me sound believable but innocent or, at least, less culpable? A good detective, knows how much can be revealed in the interview. In fact, plans exactly what will be revealed and when. Both sides always hold back. A true, complete confession, if one ever comes, is a long, drawn out process.

We are at the beginning stages of one.

MG,

So you're saying it isn't like on TV where you just have to present the evidence and they blurt out an entire confession and don't even want an attorney? Well color me disillusioned.

Or, why don't you just do the Columbo thing and aggravate them so bad they confess just to make you go away!

If you come to a fork in the road, take it!

Ha! Sorry popgun. Maybe it's just my jurisdiction that struggles with these slow, evolving confessions. Those TV shows are likely spot on everywhere else. Continue to enjoy them!

Pulling a Columbo is reserved for only the most serious of cases when we've hit a hopeless dead end in the investigation. It is incredibly effective but highly taxing on both the interviewer and the poor, unfortunate sap on the receiving end of it. If done correctly, it is living, breathing art. Done incorrectly, people die. Never take Columbo lightly.

I suggest you start with a signature line that is easy to remember. Something like, "What the heck does that mean?" "How is that humanly possible?" Or, "My granddaughter wrote this for me."

You may have faith in Hiram, but Hiram is losing all faith with all this computer nonsense!
