Magazines generally have a 90 day lead time between article written and article printed. i know this because I am an associate editor for a national publication and freelance writer in another field. So this article could have been written as late as Sept of 2015, especially if the piece was written freelance and submitted and not by a staff writer.

The bike in the article is a us STD CB1100 which comes with a 4 into 1

I wonder why they chose a Griso andnot any of MG's true retros of the V7 series.

They also did not include the Royal Enfield Bullet 500 or the Yamaha SR 500 in the comparo.

Ferret, the current V7 Sports are in a whole different category from the tested bikes - much lighter, smaller, and nimbler, and more comparable to the Royal Enfield and SR400. I test rode the V7, and it is really gutless, and made for smaller riders.

I haven't ridden a Griso (or any 4 valve Guzzi), but having owned several Guzzi V11s (Sport, Le Mans, Cafe Sport, and lastly a 1200 Sport), I can say that they are bikes that hit their sweet spot above 80, and have a rather dramatic and unexpectedly fierce acceleration that is unlike any Japanese bike.

But what really surprised me was the test's 1/4 miles times, with the Bonnie (12.19 sec.@ 106.85 mph) beating the CB1100 (12.35 sec. @ 106.20 mph). Certainly not MY Bonnie. Their Bonnie's 1/4 mile time/speed was more than a second quicker and 7 mph faster than any of their prior Bonnie/Thruxton times/speeds. What gives? A Ringer? Aftermartket exhaust? Hidden nitrous bottle?

No, this same issue also contains their Cumulative Performance Index that shows the tested bike actually did the 1/4 mile in 13.45 sec.@98.2 mph, well in line with the prior tests. So just a misprint. Whew!

Mickey, with the Holidays consuming my days, I didn't get a chance to take my CB out for a ride today, even though it was unseasonably warm, even for Houston. I do expect to get to ride here shortly, as long as it isn't raining too much. When I do, I will focus closely on what you're saying here about rolling back slowly and paying attention to that spot right before the "loose throttle free play" hits. Your description here is very good, and I think I know exactly what you speak of.

Thanks again, appreciate the extra thoughts on this - this has been "quietly" bugging me for some time now . . .

If you chop the throttle into the free play area it feels jerky, but if you roll it back to the edge and hold it there, you don't feel any of that jerkiness people describe.

Give it a try and let us know.

I had two Bonneville Americas (790cc) which actually makes more power than the 890cc later versions and no way would it ever see a 12 second quarter. Read a couple different tests; first one above times for the CB1100 look pretty much the same as the MCN test at 12.11 @ 109.25 but the second link to the MC-USA test showed the Bonny at 13.87 @ 97 mph. I wouldn't have guess a sug-14 sec. time for the bike. They are NOT fast.

I liked the CycleWorld writeup... But honestly, I'd STILL choose the CB1100, hands down: IT SPEAKS TO MY RIDING SOUL.

Cycleworld seemed taken with the looks of the beemer but I honestly don't get it... doesn't look like a motorcycle much to me. As far as a Guzzi... well I live in a rural area and not sure I want a bike I can't find parts or service for within a reasonable distance. Wouldn't mind trying one though.

Hey guys, due to copyright concerns, I've edited this thread to remove the links to the PDF attachments that were uploaded to this site. If someone can provide links to the articles as they appear on MCN's website for public consumption, that would be great.

George, I agree the Bonneville America (and the similar Speedmasters) were slower mid-14 second bikes. They weigh as much as a 2014 twin-pipe CB1100A, but with 30 fewer horses. They are a solid 80 pounds heavier than the Bonnevilles/Thruxtons/Scramblers that will turn mid 13s.
I took the front end off a 2002 America that was in a front end accident, and found the heaviest, beefiest triple clamps imaginable. Both fork tubes snapped in half below the bottom clamp, the front end dangling by the springs. Triple clamps straight as an arrow. Could have used them for an anchor on a Nimitz-class destroyer.
