RE: Motorcycle Consumer News Road Test.
I'm at less than the Honda spec on this - came from my dealer that way. I need to get out after the Holidays and loosen the chain up. Last time I looked, it was in the 3/4" range . . . .
Would a "too tight" chain contribute to what I'm experiencing?
I will say, in general, the transmission is smooth, and shifting thru the gears is a pleasure, both up and down. But I do have the "lash" and jerkiness at low speeds when riding around town unless I'm very diligent in working the clutch to prevent / reduce it. . . .

As a result, I'm putting around at low speeds, lots of starting and stopping.
I too notice more driveline lash than I would like. I have found myself working the clutch alot more than I would expect to reduce or "smooth out" the driveline lash and jerkiness.
So I have found what the reviewer says to be true - perhaps depends upon one's perspective on this matter. I would like to not have to work the clutch as much as I do while putting around town - but I do it to reduce the jerkiness and "lash" . . .
At the risk of being repetitive, chain adjustment makes a big difference on my bike. I put it right at 1" slack - the bottom of the range. For me, that reduced lash, and made shifting a lot smoother too. I was surprised how much improvement a little change made.

Trey it's probably more an issue of on/off with the fuel injection. There is no low speed jets like there used to be with carbs to merge the transition from on gas to off so fuel is either being supplied or not. Try being smoother with the throttle hand and see if that helps. A lot of people of nearly every make complain about the jerkiness at low speed with FI and common fixes are pressure regulators and throttle tubes with different ramps.

I think "The Ferret" has hit this issue square on the nose. FI seems to be very unforgiving re. throttle smoothness, especially from off throttle to about 20%. This transition is very abrupt and you must be smooth when starting off. You cannot ride this like a carb bike. If i lose focus it snaps. If I am smooth, it is smooth. Very common with modern FI bikes.

RE: Motorcycle Consumer News Road Test.
It might very well be the FI responsiveness issue. My '14 DLX is the first bike I've owned with FI . . . .
I will try being smoother with the throttle hand and see if that helps. I'm glad this came up gents - good advice here as usual!!
A little off topic, I guess - sorry 'bout that! This thread is about the MC News review . . . .

Being that I came the long way 'round to my new CB1100, (been a cb 750 F rider for years and years) and had my yamaha FZ09 for a year before I bought the CB, I don't have a clue what y'all are talking about with regards to driveline lash. Compared to the FZ, the Cb is buttery smooth at low speed throttle/off throttle/throttle situations. The FZ is truly terrible with regards to what they're calling 'driveline lash'
That's all I have to say on that.
P.S. I'm gonna go ride my CB around, it's just under 50.

RE: Motorcycle Consumer News Road Test.
Jazzman.. If you had the 14 FZ09 you are right the FI response on that bike was horrible. almost impossible to ride smoothly. It was either on the throttle and accelerating or off the throttle and coasting, there was no middle ground. The 15 is " better" especially in B mode, but it is still nowhere near as smooth on/off/on gas as the CB1100.

Hearing this makes me glad I did not buy the FZ09. I came close, but dealership did not allow test rides.

RE: Motorcycle Consumer News Road Test.
For me these are the most relevant comments in the entire article (which really doesn't plow any new ground as I've seen a comparo of the three bikes before) "The CB1100 is capable of provoking some genuine adrenaline, with the quick-revving 4-cylinder motor providing abundant power in a steady climb through the rpm all the way to the rev limiter. Although intended for a more casual approach to riding, with some stiffening of the suspension, the Honda would be capable of keeping up with a host of sportbikes." THIS....is what many, if not all of us have said on this site whenever the subject of HP and speed have come up.

RE: Motorcycle Consumer News Road Test.
Trey as I was riding today I thought about your post and what advice would help you the most, and it's this (IMO) don't chop the throttle when you let off the gas, roll it back until you are just giving it the tiniest bit of throttle right before the "loose throttle free play" hits. If you chop the throttle into the free play area it feels jerky, but if you roll it back to the edge and hold it there, you don't feel any of that jerkiness people describe.
Give it a try and let us know.
