Can anyone tell me the best, most functional windshield for the CB1100 DLX?

That's a bit like asking what is the best oil for a CB1100...everybody has their favorite.

You may need to qualify your requirements in a windshield. It will also depend on your size.

If, for example, you prefer function over form, and want the best protection, but also want a very quiet windshield...then that apparently doesn't exist yet for the CB.

By stating "most functional", I'm going to assume you mean best wind protection. If so, you may want to look at the larger shields available from National Cycle or Parabellum. Using the search function, you will see reviews from owners of both makes on this site. I have the National Cycle Streetshield EX, and for me, it provides good protection from the wind with little buffeting, but it is very noisy.

There are lots of threads on this but I'll summarize since I did the research recently before making my decision.

Most popular:

Emgo Fairing - offers least protection

Dart Marlin fly screen - a little more protection

Puig Naked or Puig Naked New Generation - still small but bigger than the above

ChicDesign Road Comet Fairing - a nice unit with fairing and a bit larger windshield but expensive

National Cycle Street Shield EX - a universal shield much larger than the above

National Cycle Street Shield - also universal and larger still

Both the National Cycle shields require clamping to the upper fork housings

One of the above should meet your needs but if not, you might consider doing as The Ferret has done and that is cutting off some of the top of the National Cycle Street Shield EX to cut down on turbulence.

To add to Postoak's list, I use a small National Cycle Deflector DX in the summer and a large N.C. Plexistar 2 in the winter. Both shields use the same mounting hardware, so swapping takes a minute or two.

I went with the Puig Naked but haven't installed it yet.

I had the bike up to 100 mph today and the wind wasn't that bad considering I don't stay at interstate speeds for very long.

I brought the National Cycle Defender EX. I really liked the look, but it was too noisy. I cut it down a couple of times as suggested and it got a little quieter, but let a lot more wind in. I was looking for something to block most of the wind and quiet the turbulence.

I ended up with a Slipstreamer Spirit. It took a lot of adjusting and I had to put pads on the inside of the windshield so it didn't rub the instruments. I'm 5'10" and the wind hits the top of my helmet. I have sit up straight to let air hit my vents. It still let air up the bottom sides that would blow and make a little turbulence. So I made some cheap lowers to see if the worked. They do, it blocks almost all air from me and lets in enough to create a rippling effect on my front.

After a lot of reading on this forum, I bought the Puig Naked New Generation in black with a dark smoke insert. It looked fantastic on my black CB. It seemed the perfect solution for the hot Texas summer with enough protection for the occasional freeway jaunt. I really wanted to keep it, but I sent it back. Here's why:

- It buzzed annoyingly between 2500-3500 rpm, right where I cruise at. It was so loud, I could hear it in my full face helmet with the face shield down. I tried everything. I even bought silicone washers to isolate all the screws and mounting points. Nothing worked.

- A couple of the bolt ends on the interior of the shield were too long. They came in contact with the tach and speedo housings whenever my speed was above 45 and there was more wind pressure on the shield. <Grrr...> I could cut the bolts, or put in an extra washer to shorten them. Because of the way the shield mounts, you can't adjust the distance/height/angle without bending the aluminum support bars. And they're stout enough that you need a vise.

You shouldn't have to go through all that crap for a windshield specifically designed for this bike. So I sent it back and will try something different.

Roper, if you get another shield and you get buzzing again, remove your headlight and wrap ALL the connectors in the shell with some thin foam. Like from packing material or something.

A number of us had this happen and it turned out the connectors were buzzing against the headlight bucket or bulb holder. Couldn't hear it until we installed a windshield or flyscreen. Drove us crazy till we figured it out!
