RE: Columbus Day Weekend 2016
Change of plans! I'm taking off next Monday (10/3), The ferret get int the train in Sanford and get to Lorton on Tuesday morning.

I'll meet Fran in Charlottesville for lunch and head to the BRP. I expect we'll enter the BRP at around 1500. I want the ride to be comfortable and not so fast that we'll miss the beauties of the road. So... Would it be to ambitious trying to get to the Roanoke area for the first night stop?

More questions to come. Stay tuned.

Hey Nemo. We are leaving Chicago on 10/8 to Viginia/West Virginia. I'm not organizing the ride so I don't have the details in front of me, but it's possible that our paths will cross. Oh..wait...you're now a week ahead of me. Well if you're still in the area on the 12th or so.....

If not, have a wonderful trip!

Thanx, M! We had to move it to make it work with my son's ship schedule.

You mean he couldn't tell them to keep the ship in port for another week? F-in Navy.

How will you get to the BRP? Skyline drive looks interesting.

It does, indeed. Some other time. This time I need to haul arse to meet my boy at Charlottesville.

Nemo,
I live 10 minutes from the Lorton Station and would be glad to meet the train and join you for the ride to Charlottesville. Then I would head home and leave you to enjoy family time with the kid. Let me know details by PM if you want the company.

You can make it to Roanoke on the BRP from Charlottesville that evening, but the BRP gets a bit tedious after a couple of hours, especially if you get behind an RV train. That's a real thing this time of year, what with the leaves getting pretty and all. Plus, as the sun gets low, the deer start to hop out in front of you. Just stay flexible and know that you can always bail out and head to I-81 or Rt 11 if you need to make time.

Yep remember Skyline Drive and the BRP are both covered by National Speed Limits of 35 and 45 respectively and they don't mess around with speeding there if you are caught. If time is of the essence the BRP is not the best route particularly during leaf peeper season.

InHouse Bob, it would be awesome if we could meet and ride together to Charlottesville! PM inbound.

Decided to forego trying to get to Roanoke. We'll spend the first BRP night at Peaks of Otter and night 2 in Little Switzerland in the Skyline Village Inn, as per Mr Ferret suggestion.

Nemo,

I just did that ride recently. Your schedule is realistic. I know the Meadows of Dan area quite well if you want food/lodging recommendations. PM me if interested. Little Switzerland a great lunch stop, don't bypass the view from Mt. Mitchell.
Cherokee is kinda ugly and quite touristy but the Nantahala Gorge is still a nice ride.. You will be right at the Cherohala Skyway, if you haven't ridden it its worth checking out. About 45 miles of nice twisty quiet and very scenic riding - I only saw 4 cars the whole time. Robbinsville was crazy though with all the pirates headed to "the dragon".

Best thing I learned from my dog: “Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride". Dan D.
