Are the ABS and non-ABS systems the same?

As far as calipers? I believe so unless it's the linked ABS of the 2013s.

All non abs and non linked abs ( dlx) have 2 pot calipers. All linked ABS have 3 pot calipers

Based on the front parts schematic I linked above, the non abs and DLX abs have 4 pot calipers. One 2-pot on the outside of the disk and one 2-pot on the inside of the disk. You can see four pistons in the diagram here. Until kmoney mentioned this, I always thought they were just 2-pot calipers.

Joe that's how I always heard them called as well.

ahh I see you're calling the pots on each side of the disc. When I see 2 "circles" on the caliper I call it a 2 pot. You see 3 circles in the caliper on Use2B's pic above I call that a 3 pot caliper.

and apparently from googling it kmoney is correct .... pots ARE called for the number of pistons in each caliper, so they would be either 4 pot or 6 pot calipers technically. I stand corrected.

After more googling stimulated by kmoney's post, there are 2 types of disk brake calipers: Fixed and sliding or floating calipers.

This young man in this youtube video explains how each type works.

All CB1100 models have a single pot (piston) floating or sliding caliper on the rear wheel.

All CB1100 models without abs have 4 pot fixed front caliper brakes.

The 2014 DLX/EX with abs have 4-pot fixed calipers on the front wheel.

the 2013 with Combined-ABS have 3-pot floating/sliding calipers on the front wheel. The center piston on the right front is linked to the rear brake master cylinder so when you apply the rear brake, the center piston on the right front caliper is engaged to allow some braking power to the front wheel. This explains why there are 2 brake lines and 2 bleed valves on the right front caliper on this model. See use2b's picture above.

My 2008 ST1300 has 3-pot floating/sliding calipers on both the front a rear wheel presumably because the front brakes are linked to the rear center piston and the rear brakes are linked to the right front center piston.
