Headers
I stupidly put my cheapo cover on before the headers cooled enough. Part of the cover melted onto one of the headers. Does any one have any suggestions as to how I can best remove this from my stainless steel headers???
Thanks.[/size]

RE: Headers
What?
A header is a set of pipes connected together that bolt to the head and come together with a common exit point. So headers would imply that there is more that one head needing pipes. (sorry...pet peeve)

Now....what cover are you talking about? There isn't anything that I can think of that gets even close to the exhaust system.

RE: Headers
I had something melt on to them (it was a while ago..some sort of plastic, if I recall). It just peeled off. I may have used a plastic putty knife.

He put his bike cover on the bike while it was still hot and the cover melted onto the exhaust pipe.

I just looked it up on youtube for you. You could try running the bike until pipes get hot. Turn bike off, then spray easy off oven cleaner on effected area, wait 5 minuted then scrape off with a non abraisive putty knife. Plastic or wood or something that wont leave scratches. Maybe just try wiping off with rags. Do not over spray on anything else. Make sure you cover up other stuff. Then polish with a metal polish. Look it up and watch it yourself before you try it. I did not try myself, im only passing on what i researched. From the video it looked like it work very well on chrome pipes.

RE: Headers
I had a polyester piece of clothing melt into my chrome pipes. I heated them up and scraped as much as possible off with a sharp piece of wood. After cooling I applied a ton of elbow grease and mothers metal Polish and cleaned the rest off. Should work just as well with stainless!

Goof Off. That worked for me many times. Or you can use #0000 steel wool and some metal polish. That and a lot of elbow grease got the burnt remains of a skull cap off the pipe where it exits the head. Whether that's a header or not, it's probably exactly the place you're talking about. Very hot. Melted instantly... then had to ride home before working to remove it. Really baked on.

RE: Headers
I'd try a small amount of Acetone on a soft cotton cloth first.
Acetone is a universal solvent for many types of plastic and synthetic fabric.
Just keep it away from any other painted or clear coated surfaces.

Many of the methods listed above may work, but with some of them there is also the potential to scratch the stainless steel or create a cloudy spot.

I'd buy a full Yoshimura racing exhaust and save all that rubbing and scraping. "Umm Yeah honey, by the time I got through adding up the cost of the acetone and rags and Scotchbrite pads, I figured I might as well just buy new pipes"
